A few of my friends are Japanese or Japanese-American and I was introduced to mochi through them. But it wasn't until I went to San Francisco's Japantown that mochi ice cream showed itself to me.
What an awesome moment that was...
They come in such pretty colors and, if the texture seems bizarre at first, keep going.
